What’s in Our Name?

Karuna (means Compassion and represents two things - Karnataka and the deep oceans that house so many creatures) - Achal (means Unwavering and represents two things - Himachal Pradesh and the inspiring mountains that protect us all)

Karunachal is a sustainable youth community movement. It is a tribe of youth by the youth and for the youth.

From the coastlines and plateaus of Karnataka (our origin) all the way up to the snow-capped mountains of Himachal Pradesh (our love), Karunachal captures the essence of these gorgeous places and beings in our name.

It reminds us that our paths can be 'tranceformed'' (a word play on trance - a state of stillness and transform - a monumental change with a definite before and after).

It reminds us that we can transcend boundaries and only our roots can take us to where our hearts lie. We cannot choose if we love the beaches or mountains more, so we said NO to the tyranny of OR and said YES to the genius of AND. We now revel in the best of both worlds by being unwavering in our compassion... not only towards these two but also towards everything in between. Whether we are from the plains, plateaus, coastlines or mountains, we're all essentially the same - one big community.

We believe that strong communities have the power to withstand any crisis, be it economical or ecological. We understand that a community fosters a sense of belonging, safety, harmony and well-being. We believe that communities can "tranceform" individuals and masses alike because the journeys of our inner selves are deeply reflected in our outer worlds and vice versa. We have been handed over an inherently flawed system with all its capitalism and commercialisation. The future of our world depends on communities coming together to create a more conscious and responsible world... and we believe that the bedrock of any community is its youth.

We believe that sustainable youth communities can transform the world.
We exist to enable youth to be more conscious and responsible future global citizens by focusing on three most important areas: self-exploration, environment-consciousness and responsible entrepreneurship.
